MERCED, Calif. – The 2016-2017 academic year may be in the rearview mirror, but the honors and awards for UC Merced student athletes are still rolling in. On Friday, director of recreation and athletics, David Dunham announced the Director's All-Academic Team honorees.
Honorees are the top ten returning student athletes in good standing based off of their previous academic year grade point averages (fall and spring). In addition to the recognition these student athletes will also be awarded a partial scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.
"We are excited to be able to recognize these ten student athletes for their outstanding academic performance during this past year," Dunham said. "These individuals exemplify what it means to be a student athlete and to excel in the classroom while they are competing at a high level representing UC Merced."
"The support for these awards was made possible by generous donors of UC Merced Athletics through the annual Giving Tuesday day of giving," continued Dunham. "The scholarship 3:1 matching component of Giving Tuesday was made possible by the generosity of Wells Fargo and Foster Poultry Farms and allows for us to expand the impact of the generous support of our donors."
Giving Tuesday was held on November 29, 2016 where over $700,000 was raised in gifts and matching funds by students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends of the campus. A portion of the total funds raised was directed to support athletic scholarships.
