The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Tuesday that 45 men's volleyball student athletes around the country were named as 2016-17 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes and UC Merced's own, Ben Nilsen was among the list.
In order to be nominated a student athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.
With the elevation of the sport of men's volleyball to a national championship level within the NAIA, this marks the first year that members of the men's volleyball team were eligible for this national honor. Junior, Computer Science and Engineering major, Ben Nilsen of Livermore, Calif. is now the first UC Merced men's volleyball student athlete to achieve this honor.
