It was there for the taking when the University of California, Merced men's volleyball team led Benedictine University at Mesa two sets to zero Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, some locker room adjustments for the Redhawks turned the game around, brought the match to a fifth set, and ultimately left the Bobcats walking away with a tough 3-2 defeat on Senior Day.
UC Merced came out firing in the first and second sets, rarely missing a single opportunity to score a point and earning 25-19 and 25-21 victories.
Having never defeated the Redhawks before, the Bobcats all of a sudden found themselves in unfamiliar territory against a team who has received votes in the national poll.
After letting sets three and four slip away, the home crowd did everything they could to rally the troops in the fifth and final set. Several times the Bobcats gained momentum and cut the deficit, but unfortunately it just wasn't enough in the end as the Bobcats dropped a painful one to Benedictine Mesa 3-2.
Cole Smith had a game of his life in the defeat, finishing with 29 kills on the night and a hitting percentage of .439.
Graduating players Samuel Hala'ufia, Matthew Lostetter, and Patrick Pascual did everything they could in their final appearance on Hostetler Court. Hala'ufia had 11 kills on a .409 hitting percentage while adding five block assists. Lostetter had a team-high 13 digs and six block assists while also adding a pair of service aces. Pascual added six digs while also crossing the 100-sets-played plateau in his career.
Tyler Cobian almost had a double-double in the loss, finishing with 11 kills and adding nine digs. He also tacked on two of the team's eight service aces.
Matthew Pelfini came one short of matching his career-high in assists, finishing his day with 55 helpers. He also added eight digs.
The Bobcats now focus on Friday afternoon, and a matchup with nationally ranked Lourdes University. It's a rematch the Bobcats have been looking forward to after Lourdes handed UC Merced their only defeat of their Ohio/Michigan road trip a few days ago.
