It's always nice to end a long road trip on a high note, and that's exactly what the University of California, Merced men's volleyball team did Thursday afternoon, dominating Adrian College 3-0 and earning their fourth win in five matches.
There are turning points in every game that stand out, and for the Bobcats, their turning point came extremely early and set the tone for the match. With the score tied 6-6, UC Merced went on a thunderous 11-1 run to bring the score to 17-7. Not only did the run position the visitors well to win the set, but it completely let the air out of the sails for the Bulldogs. The Bobcats took the set 25-14, and put Adrian College on their back foot for the rest of the match.
The Bulldogs looked to change the tempo a bit in the second set. The home team jumped out to an early lead and held two and three-point leads all the way up until 11-11. It was then though, that UC Merced seemingly ripped the momentum right out of Adrian College's paws, took it back, and used it for the rest of the set, cruising to a 25-16 set two victory.
It was more of the same for UC Merced in the third set. Other than a brief 2-1 deficit, the Bobcats held the lead for the rest of the third and took it home 25-19.
Because of the speed of which the match ended, no Bobcat reached double-digits in kills. Jacob Shelton led the way with seven kills on a .667 hitting percentage.
Matthew Pelfini was on point all afternoon, both offensively and defensively. The junior setter handed out 26 assists and added 12 digs in the easy win.
UC Merced finally comes home after their long road trip. The Bobcats return to Hostetler Court Sunday, April 2nd for a 12:00 PM first serve against Benedictine University at Mesa. It will be a special day for UC Merced, as they'll bid farewell to three graduating players: Patrick Pascual, Matthew Lostetter, and Sam Hala'ufia.
