They may be playing thousands of miles away, but the University of California, Merced men's volleyball team has felt right at home during their road trip. After defeating Cincinnati Christian University yesterday afternoon, the Bobcats cruised to a 3-0 victory over Lawrence Technical University Monday afternoon, improving their Ohio/Michigan road trip record to 2-0.
The opening set proved to be the most difficult for the Bobcats, but after knocking off some early jitters, the team rallied and locked in a first set victory of 25-22. From there, UC Merced never looked back.
The Bobcats couldn't miss in sets two and three, getting major contributions seemingly from everyone who stepped on the court. UC Merced flew through the second and third sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-17, finishing off the helpless LTU Blue Devils in just over an hour.
Jacob Shelton led the way on offense, recording a game-high ten kills in the win on a .571 hitting percentage. Shelton also led the team with a solo block and a pair of block assists. Of the 11 Bobcats who stepped on the court, eight of them recorded at least one kill.
Part of that was thanks to Matthew Pelfini's on-point passing. The junior setter recorded 29 assists in the three-set victory.
UC Merced hit extremely well all match, hitting .291 in the victory and hitting over .300 in sets two and three. On the flip side, the Bobcats held the Blue Devils to a .000 hitting percentage or lower in two of the three sets.
The win brings UC Merced's record to 5-7 on the season. Those five wins establish a new program-high for the Bobcats men's volleyball program.
The team will look to continue their hot play on the road tomorrow afternoon. They'll need all the momentum they can get, as they'll take on #6 ranked Lourdes University at 4:00 PM.
