UC Merced freshman Valeria Martinez was named First Team All California Pacific Conference, commissioner Don Ott announced today. Martinez was slected by the opposing coaches who recognized the versatility of the 5'10" Madera South High graduate. She was the only freshman selected to the all conference first team. Also recognized for their efforts were UC Merced teammates Bridgette Mayes and Alexandra Curtis who were selected Honorable Mention.
Joining Martinez on the first team ballot were Holy Names University's Ashley Nickell and Samantha Miller, Menlo's Amanda Sutter, Pacific Union's Casey Miller, Simpson's Kirsten Duren, and William Jessup's Hannah Baldwin.
Cal Pac league champion Holy Names took the top spot with four individual honors. Senior outside hitter Ashley Nickell captured the Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year. Nickell, a senior outside hitter from Modesto, was recruited to Holy Names University by current Bobcats coach, Allen McCreary, while he was the Head coach at Holy Names.
For the second consecutive year, the Libero of the Year went to Holy Names' Kayla Coleman (Turlock, CA), another one of coach McCreary's recruits to Holy Names Univeristy.
Coach of the Year honors went to Holy Names' Dwight Combs.
